Academic and Administrative Profile / Background of

Dr. P. KANNIAPPAN

Dr. Kanniappan held several academic and administrative positions at Gandhigram Rural University, a Central Deemed University. He created the Rural Energy Center at GRI and acted as the Founder Director of the Center for three years (1998 to 2001). He successfully operated several Research projects in that Centre and established a Renewable Energy Park (REP) in GRI with funding from MNES. Dr. Kanniappan acted as Principal Investigator of various Research and Extension Projects and successfully executed more than 17 R&D Projects funded by UGC, MNES, TEDA, MBHM and DAE.

He served as the Controller of Examinations, GRI from Jan 1998 to October 2001. Dr. Kanniappan served as the Registrar of GRI from September 2000 to June 2004. The Syndicate of the GRI placed on records it’s highest appreciation for the services rendered by Dr. Kanniappan as Controller of Examinations and Registrar of GRI.

Dr. Kanniappan won many awards/honours/recognitions. He received the Outstanding Young Person Award for the outstanding contribution he made to Mathematics which has been widely recognized worldwide as “Kanniappan’s Lemma”. He was the chairperson in the International Conference APORS 2000 held in Singapore. He has also won the Operational Research Development Prize – 1999 at the International Federation of Operations Research Society (IFORS) Conference held at Beijing, China during August 1999.

He acted as an expert in several committees of the UGC, AICTE and served as a Chairman of Peer Team of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore. He is a Life Member/Member in many Professional (Operations Research Society of India, Indian Mathematical Society, Operations Research Society of America, Operations Research Society of Singapore, Indian Institute of Public Administration and Indian Association for Research in Computing Science) and Academic/Administrative (such as Board of Studies in Mathematics, Academic Council, Senate, Technical Advisory Committee) bodies of various Universities/organizations.

Dr. Kanniappan visited several countries, which includes USA, France, Singapore, Malaysia, China, Thailand, Kingston, Jamaica, Dubai, Bahrain, Qatar, UK and Madagascar on various academic assignments.

Upon assuming the Vice Chancellorship of the Alagappa University in June 09, 2004, Dr. Kanniappan had his priorities set. Alagappa University has been accredited with ‘A’ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

He has created a Centre for Rural Development, Ramanujam Centre for Higher Mathematics and a Centre for Nano Science and Technology at Alagappa University. He has brought several Research and Development Projects by motivating the teachers and improved the infrastructure of Alagappa University to a vast extent by introducing schemes like ‘Performance based incentive scheme’ and ‘one teacher atleast one Project worth of Rs 10 lakhs’.

He has engineered International Collaborations with China, Malaysia, West Indies, South Korea and USA.

In the present assignment as Vice Chancellor of B.S. Abdur Rahman University, Dr. Kanniappan is making all possible earnest efforts to make B.S. Abdur Rahman University truly a global leader in teaching, research and extension by bringing in ‘Innovative Teaching, Quality Research and Consultancy’.
