CONSTRUCTION OF FERRO-CEMENT BOAT (CONCRETE CANOE) BY CIVIL ENGINEERING STUDENTS

Team Leader: Dr. R. Srinivasa Raghavan, HOD / Civil Engg.
Mentor Dr. M.S. Haji Sheik Mohammed, Associate Prof., Civil Engg.
Team coordinator Mr. C. Mohamed Iqbal (II year B.Tech.)
Team Members Mr. A. Mohamed Ali, Ms. Nithya Jayaramdas (III Year B.Tech.), Mr. M. Mohammed Mansoor, Ms. M. Lakshmi Priya (III Year B.Tech.), Mr. Thufile Ariful Mohamed ( III Yr.), Ms.Sana Ahmed, Mr. J. Mubarish (II Year B.Tech.)

An eight member student team comprising III year and II year B.Tech. Civil Students constructed a Ferro cement Boat with a dimension 16ft.(L) X 2ft.(W) X 2ft.(H) for real time applications. The work was commenced on 23rd April 2011 and successfully completed during last week of June 2011. The mould was made of wooden plank & hard board applied with waterproofing coating and polythene sheet covering. The material used for construction of boat includes two different configurations of mesh, Cement, Sand, Water and Acrylic polymer. Waterproof coating was applied with polymer modified slurry followed by epoxy resin coating.

The important aspect with the construction is that the complete work was executed by the students. The design of boat, mould preparation, selection of wire mesh, preparation and application of mortar, application of waterproofing coatings were all done by the students without getting any labour force from outside. The boat was successfully tested for its firmness, waterproofing ability and load carrying capacity on 29.10.2011 in the Crescent School swimming pool under the supervision of Dr. R. Srinivasa Raghavan (Team Leader) and Dr. M.S. Haji Sheik Mohammed (Mentor). The following pictures show the various stages involved in the making & testing of Ferro-cement Boat (Concrete Canoe).
